Like a lot of roguelikes, Risk of Rain 2 could do a better job communicating its goals and secrets to make engagement easier. ![]() I'm not sure how the game rewards grinding up my skill level besides gamer pride and the enjoyment of mastery. The "real" Risk of Rain 2 starts when you play on Monsoon difficulty, and I dabbled in it, but decided I'd rather knock other games off my backlog than stay and master the game as it's meant to be played. Disclaimer-I chose to stop playing after 45 hours rather than turn up the difficulty. But then I began unlocking more powerful characters, and I played on the easiest difficulty, and I got to experience the satisfaction of the gameplay loop. It took me a month to get 5 hours of gameplay in. The game was unforgivingly difficult for me in the beginning. So it's fun, but here are some of the negatives. The game also gets radically more difficult very quickly, requiring you to have a broken build in order to survive. The game encourages "God Runs" by allowing you to skip the final boss and keep looping through the levels. You could be nigh unkillable but if you can't kill them back quick, you'll lose the war of attrition. ![]() You could have all the damage in the world but that map isn't traversing itself. It becomes a pain when you lack in certain departments. The fun can end pretty soon (even by the first stage) when things don't happen in your favour. You will encounter many of these passively but progression is tied to accomplishing tasks that push you to learn. These in-game challenges unlock items, equipment and loadouts to be used in your very run. The way you unlock things is by essentially scrolling down the achievements list. You can reach insane amounts of speed, blow enemies up in so much as a glance and have seemingly infinite tanking capabilities. There are very much dud items but the game holds no bar against making you as strong as you make your build. I guess it's half-of a shooter but it's hard to say with the plethora of accentuation on melee combat. It fires a projectile at you and you burn to death in an instant. Just around the corner however lies a mushroom in wait. You decide to move on with your sprint speed of 175%. The difficulty scales, your short on cash for that one chest you've been camping. ![]()
